Home-Made Hot Cross Buns.

Bake your own like I did today, and you'll NEVER buy them from the shops again!

These buns are just about to go into the oven (sorry!)

Did you know that the cross on Hot Cross Buns is made with a mixture of flour and water? Until this arvo, it was news to me!

Some recipes, including the one in my Better Homes and Gardens "Holiday Cook Book" (1959) call for an egg white icing sugar combo, piped on after the buns have cooked.

Fresh out of the oven-if you wanted perfect buns, this is when you'd brush yours with a sugary glaze.

And speaking of perfect, to avoid a wonky cross, just make your flour and water mix a little thicker than I did.

(but having said that, you know I don't mind a bit of wonk. In our house, we call 'wonky food' "El Rustico!" A handy little phrase which covers all sorts of cooking disasters. It gets bandied around a lot round here!)

Delicious, and the smell while they were baking? Heavenly!

(teacups are vintage, made in Spain, a present from my sister-in-law)

Green juice be damned!

This is the recipe I used, but here's a retro one you might prefer

Happy baking and wishing you a happy Easter for next Sunday too x

  6. They look gorgeous Kylie - especially the last photo - you had me salivating! I can remember as a child being told that you could eat the buns all year round but the crosses could only be put on at Easter (stands to reason) - but I see nowadays they are available in the shops at all different times of year. Yours look much more inviting than anything I've seen recently though! xx

  21. I'm so impressed Kylie. I adore hot cross buns, and do tend to over indulge somewhat at this time of year, but the last time I attempted to make some myself they were like bullets. Not quite the perfect bun I had in mind! Yours look delicious!

  22. Wow, amazing buns! My mum made them one year and the crosses all ran off. We're not a very religious family, so maybe that was why... ;-)

  24. Yumbo Mumbo!! Whilst I'll be missing out (by choice so I can't complain) on all things decadent this Easter... sigh... tea... chocolate... etc... I am so excited about cooking and baking up a storm when I'm done... only seven more sleeps! I have been pinning recipes like a crazed foodie lately... my vegetarian board has over a 100 things to try. I also have a board called I ♥ Carbs... methinks that one will get a work out too! Have a wonderful Easter break Kylie! Enjoy them buns!
