I Don't Know Whether to Laugh or Cry

You probably know that yesterday was International Women's Day. My daughter attends an all-girls school and every year to celebrate and honour exceptional women, one of the students creates an artwork which the school turns into a postcard.

The idea is for the girls to send the card to a special woman in their life who has "influenced and shaped you into the magnificent young woman you are!"

Here's the card:

and here's what my daughter wrote on the back of hers:

I'm sure this isn't quite the message the school was hoping for!

As I said I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Or be really, really cross. What would you do?

Tonight she and I are going to have a little chat about women like:

and all of the strong, resourceful, determined women in her own family...and that's just for starters!

p.s. it's not too late to put your name down for a vintage pillow slip skirt. Just click here

  6. I would laugh long and loud!
At least she's not afraid of the word vagina - no flowers, fou-fous, marys or front bottoms for her!
Talk her about all the brilliant women in history and your family, of course - but it's good to have a laugh along the way!
Did you see Krista's post (at Peetee's Palace blog, can't recall if you two know each other, sorry) about a singer called Storm? The post is called "Normal? I'll take crazy!" and it was at the start of March. You daughter will LOVE the song she posted, take a look!
    Have a happy weekend! xxxxx

  19. OMG your daughter is fantastic, that made me laugh out loud! Perhaps laugh as she has a sense of humour / sarcasm and cry because she also has an attitude :)

  20. Your daughter has a brilliant sense of humour! :-)

I read 'How To Be A Woman' by Caitlin Moran just after Christmas and honestly wish I could put a copy into the hands of every teenaged girl on the planet as it is one of the most gender-affirming, funny and wry books I've ever read. Would recommend giving it a read yourself as I think it'd be right up your street!
