Gayware

Way To a Man's Heart

Yes! The way to a man's heart is definitely through his stomach. Fix a man a good and satisfying meal and he will do anything for you. It mellows him, makes him feel contented. It keeps him in good health.

So that's where I'm going wrong!

(image and words from my treasured, op-shopped copy of Woman's World)

While I love her snazzy Frigidaire (great product name, don't you think - almost as wonderful as Gayware) this post is all about the canisters.

Gayware was made by Gay Plastics from 1959 - 1965. I think it was manufactured in Australia, but type the word gay in google search and you're led a merry dance to all sorts of interesting places - none of them involving the manufacture of plastics!

Gayware canisters are quite the in-thing these days and a full set of five is usually pretty pricey. Anthony (who loves his canisters) has managed to pick up a couple from swap meets and garage sales for next to nothing (a red S and a black R, plus a few odd little spice canisters) but it was me, me, ME I tell you, who found our full set, all five, (in perfect nick) for ten bucks!

Here they are

in all their pink and grey glory

and

it's not just their fronts that are simple and stylish

look at their

bottoms!

  10. Wowsers. What a fabulous find. They are stunning. I love it that Anthony loves his cannisters. Unfortunately, Jim isn't a lover of them *sad face*. I know I'm a complete idiot but what do the letters stand for? Oh hang on I think I've answered my own question: flour, sugar, tea, coffee and something beginning with R. Yay! xx

  14. They are fab and look nicer in real life than in the photo. I think you got the best colour combination there - I've always liked those shades of grey and pink together. I've never heard of this make before also - it must have been made and sold only in Australia (?)
