Its the same the whole world over I am afraid. Here in NZ where I am on holiday, it seems you only have to say "earthquake proof?" and poof.....its gone.
ugh, they are always getting rid of beautiful old buildings here, because it would cost 'tooo much' to do them up apparently. Actually what seems to happen is the building is empty and deemed 'dangerous' then the council argue and argue about what to do with it and leave it long enough so vandals get in and really ruin it and then the council have their excuse to tear it down :(
ups... we have to deal with a "great" neighbourhood too, but luckily the people living in the big houses around us are very nice. our neighbour from the left was soooo happy that we bought our house and not the investor who wants to tear done our house to build two new houses on the ground with 16 flats in it... it seem to be a trend to build houses with a lot of flats in it without any garden behind :-(
I was really surprised to see that this building got approval. It doesn't suit our little town at all, and one of the things I love about it (the town) is that it doesn't have this sort of stuff.
Kylie, I can see you in a wonder woman costume and cape being the architecture protector super hero! Wow - it's like that big vicious slug building just went gulp and munched the other one up.
Eeek what is that!!! Where has any sense of history gone??? x
ReplyDeleteIt makes me sad too that so few people care about preserving. It's all about tearing down.
ReplyDeleteWas that a little 1930s shop which has been swallowed whole by that generic building? :( xx

ReplyDeleteit always makes me sad too when old things get destroyed and they don't keep at least the integrity of it.
ReplyDeletewhen you say covered up, do you mean that little building has been demolished?
ReplyDeleteMaybe they are "fixing" it? Yes, I disappeared. Just for a bit...
