Lots-o-Lemons

 

 
Why is it, when your own lemon trees are dripping with lemons, so is every other lemon tree in the hood?

Seriously there's a basket/bucket of lemons out the front of every third or fourth house I pass when I'm taking the dog for a walk. Note attached saying something like:

Free Lemons.
 
PLEASE take some!
 
And why is it, when your tree's bare, and you're desperate for a lemon (for your Caesar Salad - this always happens to us) there's not a lemon in sight?

(forcing you to trot up to Coles, and fork out top dollar for a horrible old imported lemon that doesn't smell, feel, or taste anything like, the real thing! Sound familiar?)
 
Lemons are a great example of the old "feast or famine" adage - you're either loaded or your bust. Because I can't bear to see ours go to waste (there are only so many ice-block trays of lemon juice I can fit in the freezer!), and because I thought you might be in a similar predicament, I thought I'd share a few lemony recipes here over the next month or so. The yummy ones, obviously.
 
First up a recipe from David Lebovitz.

(if you've never heard of David - I have only recently discovered him - I have to tell you that every single recipe I've tried of his has turned out perfectly, not to mention deliciously, plus he's a brilliant writer. You know those cooks that tell stories you want to read with their recipes? Well he's one of those.)

Yesterday I made his Whole Lemon Bars, and while they made only the tiniest dint to our lemon glut, they are

  1. ...or worse, you go to the grocers and they say "you can't get lemons this time of year, they're out of season". true story. have they never heard of importation?!!!
    lemon curd tarts. unsophisticated, but oh so scrummy!

  4. sounds yummie. in germany we can´t plant lemons, it´s to cold. so we have to use the imported ones and they are not delicious, only grhhh.

  6. I wish! Never having lived anywhere warm enough to grow lemons, it sounds fabulous to have a glut of them! I love sharp lemony flavours, in desserts or savoury dishes, so I am really liking the look of your lemon bars. It would be shop-bought lemons for me, though - sadly... xxx

  8. Have never heard of David, but will be sure to explore his recipes, thanks for the tip! We love all things lemon too and these bars look absolutely delicious. Going to have to try and do them gluten and dairy free. Enjoy xo

    Will be completely honest and tell you just how envious I am that there are literally buckets full of the joyful little yellow things round your way! I pay £1 for 3 of the little blighters here!

  15. You're so lucky to live in a climate that allows you to have lemon trees. We're not quite far enough south, although parts of our state are good for citrus growing. Your lemons are gorgeous, and those lemon bars look so good I'm drooling.

  16. I'm a huge David Leibowitz fan...you are right...his recipes never ever fail and I've made quite a few. His chocolate brownies, when you are finished with your lemons, are heavenly. Really. We're currently chomping our way through a lemon drizzle cake that the OH made...dee-lish. I do like lemony things.

  19. Oh, I can smell and taste those lemons just by looking at that picture, they look absolutely gorgeous!!! I looove lemons, and having them straight from your own tree sounds like a dream. I'm sure they're so much more fragrant and yummy than the storebought, imported ones we get here, that have ripened in a warehouse.... And the thought of them being given away on every street corner just drives me mad, I'm so jealous!!!

  21. Lemon butter or lemon curd is a great way to use them up. And G&Ts. And have you thought about preserving a few in salt for Moroccan inspired dishes? The lemon bar looks sensational. xx

  22. We have TWO enormous lemon trees that are dripping with lemons at the moment! I end up freezing lemon juice in snack sized zip lock bags for those times of the year when lemons are scarce. I love the smell of lemons - your bowl looks beautiful. Will have to try David's recipe - looks delish!

The lemon bars look yum, 'though they'd be even nicer made with canned pineapple I'm sure!This Blender Lemonade recipe is lovely and easy and uses the whole lemon (almost). 1 lemon, 1/4 cup sugar,2 1/2 cups water. Wash lemon, cut off thick ends, cut into 8 pieces. Place all ingredients into blender, blend on high speed until lemon is finely shredded. Strain, use soon after blending.:)

  25. Oh Kylie I am going to miss our lemon tree so much.......it was a magnificent producer.
    Home lemons are the best.......last week I made a lemon cake......I was a little nervous pouring so much liquid over the baked cake, but it was yummy. First time....yay.
    Now sweet your truly wonderful parcel came and what lovely treasures. The wall hanging and earrings are fabulous....thank you so much, it was so nice to see it in the mail box.
    You asked a question about a watch......sorry it has found a new home.....thank you for asking.

  26. yep bumper crops everywhere by the looks!!...I`ll try your recipe this weekend looks great. Nics lemon lime tart was demolished in seconds....thanks for the mention. im trying to work out how to put lemons and passionfruit together, other than a cocktail I haven't gotten far....cocktails it is then!! xx
